In commemoration of the World War I Centennial, please see the tribute to Syracuse, New York’s Polish-American veterans of the First World War. The following link takes you to the memorial dedicated to the “Polish Legion of American World War Veterans” located in Kosciuszko Park in front of the former Sacred Heart School at the intersections of Park and Lakeview Avenues and W. Genesee Street in Syracuse. This small memorial lists the names of ten men who died in action during WW1 and 118 veterans of the First World War. These veterans of the “World War” were the first members of what has become Post 14 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans (PLAV). Post 14 is named after Pvt. Eugeniusz Jablonowski, who was killed in action on July 18, 1918, is listed on the memorial as one of the ten dead.
This memorial was dedicated on Sunday, May 26, 1935. Of the names listed, we have biographical information on most of them, but have no information at all on one of those who were killed in action and 31 of the veterans.
This is a part of the Syracuse Polish-American Veterans Documentation Project website. The project team hopes to add more to the website by adding the biographies of the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans listed on the “Polish American War Memorial” in Pulaski Park.
